Why a Counselor is Essential to the Recovery Process

Addiction recovery has never been easy. There are countless stories of individuals who have tried to help themselves, enroll in programs, and even get admitted to treatment centers but have had little luck successfully quitting drugs or alcohol. Why is this prominent though? Many times, it stems from the lack of a professionally trained drug and alcohol counselor

But some might still ask, what does a counselor contribute to the recovery process?

For starters, a licensed drug and alcohol counselor is someone who is trained not only in psychological counseling but also in the development of personalized treatment plans for clients who might be struggling with addiction. In short, this makes them a one-stop shop for all things addiction recovery.

Say a patient is having trouble keeping up their motivation for recovery. A counselor would be able to set up that patient with different tools and plans to recover that motivation. This, in turn, would lessen the chances of relapsing.

Clients who struggle with drug and alcohol addiction commonly also struggle with managing personal relationships, especially with family. A counselor is someone that those in recovery can turn to in order to navigate difficult relationships. Bettering relationships with those around you is a crucial step in the recovery process, as having love and support is sometimes the best motivation to keep going.

There are always times in life when emotions can become overwhelming and simply take over. These kinds of emotions, like anger or sadness, can be exponentially heightened while going through the recovery process. Having a counselor will give the patient someone to talk to in order to understand the cause of said feelings, and give them the tools to manage them in the future.

Recovery from addiction has also been cited as being an isolating experience. This is especially true for those who have little support around them. A counselor gives those going through the process someone to talk to, someone to challenge them to get back out into social circles. It’s important to have people to talk to and are comfortable around while going through recovery.

The recovery process is never a perfect one. There are likely to be times when relapse happens. Some might take this and simply spiral back into their past routines, but those who have a counselor that they are comfortable with may avoid this. A licensed addiction counselor will be able to help clients manage the emotions that come from a relapse and give them the tools to move forward with their recovery.

Simply put, a licensed drug and alcohol counselor is an essential part of the addiction recovery process for many people. These are people that are dedicated to helping their clients reach their recovery goals, and who will be there to walk them through the often-difficult process.
